The inter-governmental agreement that has been negotiated between city officials and Tribal leaders will mitigate the impacts of the development on the city or its resources.
Mitigation commonly provides relief to public safety and traffic concerns but may also be applied to road improvements, infrastructure, and schools at the discretion of the city. Ultimately, it is in the best interest of both the City of Taunton and the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe that Taunton experiences revitalization as the host of the destination resort casino.
According to Beyond the Casino Floor: Economic Impacts of the Commercial Casino Industry", the most recent comprehensive study published on gaming, nearly two-thirds of all indirect and induced economic outputs from gaming facilities in 2010 were generated beyond the casino into the host community and surrounding region. The study reports that since Pennsylvania expanded gaming, there has been a growth of 15,000 jobs directly related to the industry, law enforcement officials have reported crime has not significantly increased, and the average property owner has seen a decrease in taxes.
The Masphee Wampanoag Tribe continues to demonstrate its commitment to the City of Taunton and the community by sponsoring local festivals, events and youth activities such as sports teams. As a responsible community partner, the Tribe strives to be an integral part of Taunton.
